The announcement from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California that NASA’s rover Curiosity successfully landed on Mars reaffirms, to the pessimist or skeptic and optimist alike, that “whatever the human mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve”.These words came from Napoleon Hill. He added, “there are no limitations to the mind except those we acknowledge”.
Limitations are not integral parts of the Universe, they come from within us; we make them when we believe in impossibilities.
We have commented on double-amputee Oscar Pistorius reaching the semi-finals of the men’s 400 metres at the Olympics because he directed his mind and his desire to doing it. Then it was not an impossibility.
Commenting on the successful landing of Curiosity, President Obama reaffirmed that no odds can match the “blend of ingenuity and determination”. This truth covers every area of life; it is not limited to science or technology or athletics only.
What is possible today was unimaginable a thousand years ago, or even a century ago. The possibilities of a hundred years from now are the thoughts, desires and determination of an open mind today. It is worth remembering that today’s cell phones were science fiction twenty years ago.
Once again, the principles are the same for every area of life. Joy and happiness, growth and success, well-being and satisfaction are all possibilities. What is needed is the desire and determination to attain them.
